The Dutch Galle Fort |
Spend the day exploring the ramparts and narrow winding streets of the UN World Heritage site of Fort Galle. The most enjoyable way to experience the Fort is by walking. Entering the Fort a stroll takes one past the old Dutch Church, the Governor’s house, the Spice warehouses, the Court Square, the Kacheri, the Lighthouse and then onto the seawall and ramparts.
There is also a Mosque, at which the long |
streets finger out until one reaches the local cricket grounds, the Buddhist dagoba and the old District Judge’s house surrounded by ancient frangipani trees. Climb to the highest bastions of the Fort for views across the town of Galle to St. Aloysius Cathedral, The Galle International Cricket pitch and the Port. The Clock Tower marks the hour and you know its time to join your driver again and make back to Nisala Arana for an evening cocktail in the garden.
Galle Fort also offers some exciting boutiques, galleries, jewellers and lunch must be taken at the Galle Fort Hotel. |
